Have you been missing me?

Hi friends. Have you been missing me?? During the great blogpacalypse of 2013 I lost all of you in the transfer to self hosting! I hope you will all follow along to see what Runner Girl Eats has been up to lately :)

Where are you going?

Growing up everyone is asked the question “What do you want to be when you grow up?” and you quickly rattle off a list of professions; teacher, police officer, doctor, trapeze artist. But how are you really supposed to know what you want to do for the rest of your life?

I am 27 years old and I still have no idea what I want to be when I grow up. The first thing I could remember wanting to be was a writer. I would write all day, every day, about everything. I had dreams of walking into Borders (RIP, Borders :() and seeing my latest page turner displayed among all of the authors I looked up to. Then I wanted to work for the FBI. That one stuck for a while. I am not sure where exactly that dream fizzled out but eventually it just didn’t seem right. Honestly a part of me  would love to still be both, along with a million other things.

when i grow upIn college I took a couple psychology classes and figured “Sure, why not“. So a few years later I was graduating with a degree in psychology and no idea what I wanted to do with it. I kept thinking it will come to me but it still hasn’t. I had a job in the field and eventually fell out of love with it so I made my first career change three years post grad.

My job right now is just that, a job. It pays my bills and I have adult things like health and dental insurance, vacation days and coworkers that buy me red velvet cake on my birthday. But lately that feels like that’s all there is to it. I do not want to be there forever but I don’t know where I want to go.

fork-in-the-roadApparently I am not alone. The average person holds 10 careers in their lifetime. Not 10 jobs, careers. So why am I so stressed out about not knowing what I will be doing when I am 55 years old? Why do I feel like I am running out of time?

Lately I have been focusing on what I want to do right now. I have been ignoring the old question of “Where do you see yourself in 5 years?” because I do not have a crystal ball so how the hell do I know? If I can figure out what makes me happy now, I have faith that it will lead me to something that makes me happy in 5 years, 10 years, 20 years.

alice cat quoteI’ve also been investing in myself. I read everything. EVERYTHING. Sometimes I feel a spark from what I am reading, sometimes I get a sense of distaste. Either way, I am learning. I am learning about the world and I am learning about myself. I interact with everyone I come in contact with. Not chat, interact. I ask questions, I offer suggestions, I make connections. I’ve embraced my hobbies. I choose to do these things in my free time for no compensation so there must be a reason. Sometimes its hard work. Sometimes I complain. But I keep doing it because I truly enjoy it. I’ve started to focus on what draws me to my hobbies, and dive into that.

do-what-makes-you-happyThere have not been major changes to my career or plans in the few months that I have been focusing on these things but my attitude has changed greatly. The ripples have started. I no longer focus on not finding my career soulmate and I am enjoying the ride.

it wont be boringIt’s like the great philosopher Whitesnake said, I don’t know where I’m going but I sure know where I’ve been.

Do you know what you want to be when you grow up?

How many careers have you had?

Goodbye Summer, Hello Fall!

Summer is not my favorite time of  the year. In fact, it is my least favorite of all the seasons. I am pale all year long but during the summer my paper white complexion is even more noticeable. Also, the only thing worse than Matt making me watch football all Fall long, is Matt whining about not watching football all Summer long. However, there are a few things I truly love about Summer.  Since this is the last official weekend of summer, I have plans to soak up as much of my favorite summer things as possible. So if you need me this weekend, you can find me enjoying a few of my favorite summer things:

This sunscreen.

ocean potion sunscreenNot only does it work well, but it is not greasy and it smells like an orange creamsicle. Matt gets giddy about putting it on. Seriously, Ocean Potion is the greatest.

No crowds.

Living in a college town we notice about a 50% decrease in the city population. There is less traffic. Less people in front of me at Publix. Less everything annoying.

Our beach chairs and umbrella.

beach chairsI admit I felt like a 60 year old couple when we bought this umbrella but I am so in love with it. Us pale people need shade at the beach and I appreciate not having to lay in the sand anymore. Thank you Mr Tommy Bahama, we owe you.

Nothing is tastier and more refreshing than a smoothie in the summer time. I have had one (or sometimes even two) daily all summer.

Long days.

This pic was taken at 9pm in July. I love it.

I am already dreading early sunsets.

And of course, it only feels right to lead into some of the things I love about Fall…

Our Birthdays.

long-life-wrinkled-body-naked-birthday-ecards-someecardsMatt and I have birthdays 5 days apart and our birthday week always makes me abnormally happy. I hope I never reach the age when birthdays stop being fun.

Butternut Squash.

While the rest of the world is Pumpkin crazy, I am loading up on butternut squash everything. That being said, I can’t wait for a pumpkin cream cheese muffin from Starbucks.

Cool weather.

Nothing beats the first day that I have to walk back inside to grab a sweater when I go to work. I look forward to that day all year.

Using the oven.

All summer we try to avoid using the oven. Since 90% of my favorite comfort foods require some baking, I can’t wait to crank up the oven and snuggle under a blanket while my Butternut Squash Mac and Cheese bakes.

I am seriously lusting after these ankle boots.

Cheers to the season of boots! Everyday in boots is a good day.

What will you miss about Summer?

What are you excited about for Fall?

Healthy Labor Day Treats

How is it Labor Day already?! Summer flew by! Florida is a little behind the rest of the country so our summer temps will probably hang around until October but that’s actually ok with me. I don’t think I have drank enough Summer Shandy to be ready to say goodbye to summer quite yet ;) However, I am plenty ready for a three day weekend. Like 97% of America I plan on BBQing and pool partying all weekend (FYI 5 out of 5 of the statistics on this blog are made up).

Here are a few of my favorite guilt-free BBQ treats:

black bean avocado salsa

mushroom burger

  • Watermelon and Feta salad
  • Grape Skewers -the perfect dessert for entertaining at a pool party

And, of course,

Thursday night I made a new healthy meal option that I can tell will be a regular on our dinner menu:

Sweet Potato Chick Pea Burger topped with a fried egg

Sweet potato chick pea burger

And because I got so many Instagram pleas for the recipe, here you go:

Sweet Potato Chick Pea Burger Patty

  • 1 cooked sweet potato (no skin)
  • 16 oz chickpeas, rinsed and drained
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon curry powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Dash of garlic salt
  • Dash of pepper
  • 1 cup Panko crumbs
  • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley
  • Coconut oil for frying

Place all of the items through pepper into a food processor and blend until smooth. Fold in Panko crumbs and parsley and refrigerate for at least an hour (I made the batter in the morning and formed into patties after work and it worked out perfectly)

Form into patties (we made three large patties) and pan fry in coconut oil until crispy.

We ate these on top of a salad since we didn’t have any buns and it worked out perfectly. Matt topped his with a fried egg and sriracha and I chose to go eggless with a drizzle of honey. Both options were delicious.

I don’t think these would hold up on the grill very well but they were perfect on the stove. And meat man Matt couldn’t stop raving about it so it’s safe to say this is a winner dish.

What are your plans this weekend?

What is your favorite healthy BBQ food?

Fitness Friday: At home workouts

The Friday before a three day weekend is also full of so much excitement. I am beyond stoked to have three days to do whatever my little heart desires (read: eat, run, nap). Here’s a glance at what I’ve been up to this past week fitness wise:

Really wanted to use the rower but there is only one in the gym and there was a guy using it the whole time (and by using it I mean sitting on it occasionally doing a few rows. I was really annoyed). I wasn’t feeling any other cardio options so that was that.

2 mile walk with Matt

Yoga by the pool

Ran 1 mile to the stadium, 35 minutes of running stadium stairs with tricep dips and pushups in between, 1 mile back to the car

Stretching (used tennis ball to stretch out the hamstrings)

16 hour work day= no workout :(

3 mile run with 6 hill repeats in the middle. This run was done midday and I didn’t want to die immediately after. Either my body is finally adjusting to summer running or Fall really is coming.

Same stadium workout as Sunday (a little shorter time wise though…maybe twenty minutes?) but with the Marching Chiefs practicing while we ran.

AM: Back+Biceps

PM: Rower 10mins/6min abs+2min plank/20min elliptical

The beginning of this week was crazy packed and workouts had to be short and sweet. Thursday I was all hopped up on long weekend excitement and got in two workouts. It felt awesome. My stretching wasn’t as great as last week but oh well. I feel good so I won’t stress too much.

This past week I’ve come across some great fitness related blogs/articles/etc so I decided to share a few here in case you missed them on Twitter.

You may have noticed a theme here….each one focuses on gym free exercises. With my gym membership ending soon, I have been searching the interwebs looking for different moves and exercises that I can do at home. When I don’t have a gym membership I tend to cut back on the strength training and I am really hoping to avoid losing all of my strength training motivation this time. I am working on putting together a semi schedule so that I will be “forced” to follow through with the workouts and also planning on a few classes every now and then to keep me in check.

Any other tips for strength training without a gym?

How do you get motivated to workout at home?

Losing control and finding a moment

1.) A year or so ago I read Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn and loved every page of it. Every book since then has been compared to it and none were able to live up to the book on the pedestal. Until I found another Gillian Flynn book, Dark Places. Seriously, this woman can write a page turner.

Dark Places in a sunny place

Dark Places in a sunny place

2.) Saturday morning I was rushing Matt to get ready and either go to the gym or go for a run with me. He accused me of not being able to relax or ‘go with the flow’. Stubborn me wanted to prove that that was not true so I stopped nagging and let him dictate how the day would go. I was told we were going to the gym but instead Matt drove me all over town with no explanation of where we were going or what we were doing, waiting for me to explode so he could prove his point. Don’t get me wrong, I love just hanging out with Matt, but the whole day drove me nuts.

Matt told me we were going to the gym. This is where we ended up.

Matt told me we were going to the gym. This is where we ended up.

I like a plan. I like go go go. I admitted defeat and accepted that I am unable to go with the flow. Unless I am leading the flow, then I am totally game (refer to my I need to be in control post for more crazy control talk)

3.) I tend to rush through the week without taking a moment to stop and enjoy things around me (see above). But lately I have been forcing myself to take a little time mid week to treat myself. Tuesday evening I enjoyed a glass of Chardonnay while reading the latest giant issue of Elle and painting my nails.

treat elleI also may have had a grilled cheese and Klondike bar for dinner. It wasn’t an awful night ;)

4.) School is back in session and that means the population of Tallahassee has tripled in the last week. Traffic is awful. Publix in crowded. And I am the oldest person anywhere I go by a good 6 years. But this all does mean one thing: College football is right around the corner.

And more importantly, college football tailgating is right around the corner. Because, let’s be serious, I am much more concerned with chips and dip than field goals and tackles.

Do you have a go to author?

What are your favorite ways to treat yourself?

Are you excited for football season?

WTF?! Wednesday

Happy Wednesday! We are half way to three glorious days to soak up the last of summer. But first, let’s address some of the WTF?! that has been floating around the internet. Of course we are going to start with little Miss Hannah Montana…

Miley Cyrus

I love shock. I love woman pushing the envelope. I do not love desperate performances that aren’t good. Put your tongue away, put on some pants, and get yourself together, Miley.

Can’t Keep up with Lamar Odom

Who knew LamLam had a drug problem? Can the Kardashian’s please take a hiatus and focus on living their lives and not creating bad tv? Also, am I the only one that thinks this looks like a Christmas card from the Addams’ family?

Put your hands where I can see them and give me $1?

An Oregon man robbed a bank for $1 so that he can go to jail for health care.

All hail the Flying Spaghetti Monster!

I don’t know what’s weirder…that this man is wearing a colander on his head in his license photo or that he is a worshipper of the Church of Flying Spaghetti Monster which dictates he needs to wear a colander on his head.

Would you like fries or garlic bread with that?

Can’t decide if you want a pizza or a burger? If you are in Japan, you won’t have to. This 2.65-pound creation is made with thick beef patties sandwiched between two 11-inch pizzas. In addition to the pizza sauce and cheese you’d expect from a pizza, the Megaburgerpizza is also dressed with ketchup, onion, and pickles.  BRB I have to go vomit.

And a personal WTF?! moment: My usual salon mixed up my hair appointment yesterday and I was too impatient to wait until later this week (read: my hair looks like a mangy dog and it’s impossible to wait another second) so I ventured to a new salon. I was told at the door one price, got my hair done with a great stylist and loved it. Then went to pay and was told it would be $35 more than I was told originally because the receptionist was new and gave me the wrong price. Um, WTF?! why is that my fault? The owner said “Oh well. At least you will know for your next visit.” No thanks, Envy Salon.

What is the last WTF?! you saw lately?

Tuesday Tips: Shoes, earbuds and foam rolling

If you follow me on Instagram you may have noticed that I have been sporting a new pair of shoes.

New Balance 870 V2

New Balance 870 V2

A few weeks ago I headed to a running store to have my gait analyzed by running on a treadmill while they recorded me. I tried on a bunch of shoes recommended for my running gait…all of which were too big for me. The curse of the little footed girl. I could have ordered my size through the store but at $115 after my running club discount I decided to try my luck online and found these for $60 with free shipping. Win.

I have run in Nikes exclusively and even before running pretty much all of my walking, ellipticalling, etc shoes were Nike so it took a little while to get used to the New Balances but I am really like them. They are light, have more support than my Lunarglides, and are super comfortable. Also, look how crazy fun they look? Don’t pretend you don’t care what your shoes look like. Everyone loves a fun shoe.

I haven’t done a long run in them yet but they have been through stadium stairs, easy runs, intervals, treadmills, one day walking around to break them in and they were successful at all of the above.

I also finally bought a new pair of earbuds after sending mine on a trip through the washer and dryer.

Yurbuds....I love thee.

Yurbuds….I love thee.

I usually buy $10 earbuds from Target that instantly stop working at the first drop of sweat and fall out every 13 steps. Since I saved money on my new shoes, I decided to splurge and buy the Yurbuds for women for $30ish at Sports Authority. Yes $30 is a splurge…that is a 300% increase! I.Love.These. They never fall out. They are comfortable. And they sound a million times better than my janky old earphones.

Everyone is all about the foam rolling. I have never done it and honestly don’t know the difference between a foam roller and a pool noodle.

Mystery piece of foam, why are you half the length but double the cost of a noodle?

Mystery piece of foam, why are you half the length but double the cost of a noodle?

But after running stadiums Sunday my left hamstring felt a little off so figured why not? I improvised and whipped out the ol’ tennis ball.

That is not my leg.

That is not my leg.

Maybe I was doing it wrong or maybe I have a higher pain tolerance than others but I actually enjoyed every roll and did not experience the pain others talk about. Either way, my hammy feels great now and I saved $$$$ by not buying a piece of foam you can’t enjoy while sipping a pina colada. My tennis ball has become my new bestie.

What brand of shoes do you run in?

Favorite earbuds?

I used to steal Matt’s iPhone 5 buds but he started to hide them from me. Hence the Yurbuds purchase.

Foam rolling: yay or nay?

Meatless Mondays: Blogs and Benefits

I’ve never been a huge meat eater. I first attempted a vegetarian diet when I was 11 years old because I learned that Leonardo DiCaprio was a vegetarian and obviously if we were going to get married, I should be one too. I had no idea what it meant to be a vegetarian so I spent a few weeks eating toast and cucumbers and the occasional Jell-o pudding snack. I lost a lot of weight I didn’t have to spare and Leo hadn’t fallen in love with me yet so I quit.

Fast forward to my freshman year of college for my second meat free attempt after accidentally watching a horrible PETA ad showing violent animal slaughters. Did I mention this was the night before Thanksgiving? Yea, I nearly barfed when we carved the turkey. Eventually I started eating fish then white meats but I never really missed the red meat. So for most of college I did not eat red meat with the exception of the occasional hangover cure of a Whopper Jr with cheese. Don’t judge me. College is meant for experimentation.

Then Matt moved in and started grilling steaks with blue cheese crumbles and rosemary lamb so red meat seemed less scary and more tempting. But if I am cooking, we are usually eating seafood or meat free meals.

People tend to think that vegetarianism/veganism/Paleo/etc is an all or nothing thing. “I could never give up _______ so I don’t bother”. That is dumb (no offense). Why can’t you eat spinach and lentils 6 days a week then have some chicken wings smothered in blue cheese while watching football on Sundays? Balance, yo.

Meatless Mondays are rising in popularity and for good reason. Not only is it easy to do (one day!) but that one meat free day is loaded with benefits. I even have Matt the Meat Man joining me for a few meatless nights! Check out some of the perks of going meatless, even for just one day:

I know it’s Monday and reading is hard so all the info is in picture form. You’re Welcome.

meatlessFeel free to check out my post from yesterday with a few meatless meal options or check out some of my favorite veggie inspiration blogs to get some Meatless Monday meals:

More clean eats

Lately my eats have been less than healthy but more than delicious.

Exhibit A: Voodoo Dog

Saurkraut, Swiss, Mustard; Mac and Cheese; Sour Cream and Guacamole (all dogs were wrapped in bacon)

Saurkraut, Swiss, Mustard; Mac and Cheese; Sour Cream and Guacamole (all dogs were wrapped in bacon)

No, I did not eat all of them, but the one I did eat (loaded with sour cream and guac and wrapped in bacon) was more than enough to make me feel a little diner’s remorse. Also, there were at least a pound of vinegar fries consumed. For the record, it was delicious and I will return.

Exhibit B: Sheppard’s Pie Wrap with a side of yucca fries from Street Chefs and The Turnover Cafe food trucks, respectively.

shepards pie wrapThis wrap is seriously one of the best things I have ever ordered from a food truck. I enjoyed every bite as I sat on the ground in my sweaty post workout clothes. And if you have never had fried yucca you are not from Miami really missing out.

Exhibit C: Bacon Cheddar Waffles

bacon cheddar wafflesI was craving breakfast for dinner and Matt wasn’t so I pulled out the wild card that always works: a new idea involving bacon. And Bacon Cheddar waffles were born (we just added shredded cheddar and cooked bacon pieces to Bisquick batter). The only thing these were missing was fried chicken. Also, I have apparently lost all self control.

And let’s not forget Exhibit D:

cookie truck oreo

I followed this truck all the way to work on Thursday and by lunch time I found myself at the vending machine. It was a shameful walk back to my desk.

Obviously I can’t keep eating like this if I want to be able to fit into my wedding dress/live past the age of 30. This weekend I have been trying to clean it up a little….

Friday night we went to a friends house and I brought this simple Feta Tomato Bruschetta Dip:

Tomato feta dip bruschetta

A few plum tomatoes, crumbled feta, chopped fresh basil, minced garlic, olive oil, salt and pepper. Mix together and zap for a minute or two to start to melt the feta and serve with pita chips, bread, veggies, whatev (we put the leftovers in yesterday’s quiche and it was sooooo good). Easy peasy and delicious.

Saturday I made hummus and veggie stuffed mushrooms:

stuffed mushroomsI have been wanting to make these ever since I saw them on Clean Eating Veggie Girl  a few weeks ago so I took what I had in my kitchen and whipped up a similar dish. Mine included: red onion, garlic, green pepper, baby bella mushrooms, hummus, and feta. Matt made a few of his own stuffed mushrooms with chorizo and said that my veggie ones were even tastier. And then a pig flew across the room. Ladies and gents, this dish is a winner.

I also decided to actually plan out some meals for the week so that I am less likely to end up at the food trucks. Here are a few of the meals I have Pinned that will be making their way onto my plate this week:

Crockpot Quinoa and Vegetables

taboulehSkinny Broccoli Cheddar Soup

Chickpea Sweet Potato Burger with Dilly Cucumbers

What is your go-to healthy dinner?

Do you plan your weekly meals?

Not usually but I always say that I will.
